Los Tigres del Norte Foundation

Our foundation has been helping young children across Mexico and the United States for more than a decade. We are proud of the important goals we have achieved with the help of the local communities. Every year we help keep young adolescents off the street, and into sport and art activities. It is important that we keep doing the work that we love and that our communities so desperately need.

It is a lot easier to rescue the programs that are already functioning, than trying to start a new one. Los Tigres del Norte

Originally from Rosa Morada, Sinaloa, Mexico, Los Tigres del Norte now call San Jose, California home.  The band’s name translates into “The Tigers of the North” in English. The band was first founded by new york apartments Jorge Hernandez, along with his cousins and his brothers.  After moving from Rosa Morada, Sinaola, Mexico to San Jose, California in the late 1960s, the group began making records.  The members apartments for rent in new york were all in their teens at the time, and therefore were sponsored by a locally based record company known as Discos Fama.  The company was owned by Art Walker, an Englishman, who in a way adopted the group and helped them with writing their material and recording their early albums.  He also helped them to find jobs to support themselves during the process.

During the early days, Los Tigres del Norte were only popular on a local level.  However, after Art Walker and Jorge heard a Los Angeles mariachi singer perform a song about a pair of drug runners, Camelia la Texana and Emilio Varela, in early 1971, the group took off.  While there had been other songs, or corridos as they are known in Mexico, about the drug trade and border relations since the days of Prohibition in the 1920s, there had never been a song as intriguing as this one.  This was the first time people had heard a song about a female drug smuggler who takes off with the drug money after shooting the male.  After obtaining permission from the mariachi singer to record this song, Los Tigres del Norte released their own version in 1974 known as “Contrabando y Traicion”, which translates into “Contraband and Betrayal” in English.  This song quickly became popular both in the United States and Mexico, propelling the group to the top of the Spanish pop music charts, as well as inspiring several movies.

Los Tigres del Norte have been quite skilled as portraying real life scenarios in a way that tugs at the hearts of people across both countries.  This style is known as Norteno conjunto form, which first originated near the region of Mexico near the Texas border, and features the accordion.  Most of the group’s most popular songs are told in a story or corridor form and have to do with struggles to survive in different types of settings, about love, and about everyday life.  The songs often tough on controversial issues such as illegal immigration and drugs, but they also have a good deal to do with betrayal between men and women, as well as love.

The group, with the help of their loyal followers, has turned the type of music known as norteno into a genre that is truly international.  Los Tigres del Norte has transformed this type of music, modernized it, and infused it with unique effects such as waltzes, cumbia, bolero, and rock rhythms, as well as sound effects such as sirens and machine guns.

Los Tigres del Norte is proud of how far they have come by selling more than thirty two million records, and winning five Latin Grammy Awards. The accolades for this group do not end there, however.  On January 9, 2007, Los Tigres del Norte received another honor by becoming an BMI icon at the fourteen annual edition of the BMI Latin Awards.  The group was honored that night with a great ceremony that included an all star musical tribute.  Los Tigres del Norte received the honor of becoming an BMI icon by providing a “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers”.  Receiving this honor allowed the group to join a list that includes some of the best Latin Music artists of all time such as Carlos Santana and Juan Luis Guerra.

Today, Los Tigres del Norte continue to play the music that they love, and that which has made them famous.  They continue to perform for their fans all over the world, including performances for the United States Armed Forces overseas in locations such as South Korea and Japan.

The group once again made headlines in 2010 for taking a stand for what they believe in and addressing a controversial issue of immigration reform.  Los Tigres del Norte joined in with a major international boycott of the State of Arizona.  This action came on the heels of the state’s new and contentious law that became known as the “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act”.

Los Tigres del Norte plans to continue making the music that they love and entertaining those who have been loyal fans.  They also will continue to become involved in issues they believe are of importance in order to promote better relations between the United States and Mexico as well as encourage equal rights for immigrants.
